The Process of Debate

The Process of Debate

We are going to debate the argument of the impact on labeling foods which contain GMO materials. More importantly, we are going to examine the process of debate. How each party tries to pursue and convert public opinion.

The Process:

  • Review the statements of each party
  • Investigate the integrity of each party - what is the motivating factor, if any
  • Substantiate statements as being factual from being non-factual
  • Expose who is furnishing the studies
  • Present any inconsistencies in any of the studies or factual data
  • Establish any patterns or connections between the parties and their information sources

Argument Against Prop 37 (abstract)

Proposition 37 is a bad initiative

Support to Prop 37 States (health/environment):

"Another silly labeling law. Genetically engineered food is not scary, it’s advanced technology. This one could result in more lawsuits and higher food prices."

----------------------------

Opposition to Prop 37 States (lawsuits):

Proposition 37, the genetically engineered foods labeling initiative more correctly should be called the trial lawyers' full-employment initiative.

That's because enforcement of this poorly drawn measure on the Nov. 6 ballot is left largely to the courts by way of lawsuits. Guess who wins and guess who loses in such an enforcement system?

We urge a "no" vote on Proposition 37.

Argument for Prop 37 (abstract)

Proposition 37 is a good initiative

Support to Prop 37 States (health/environment):

Proposition 37, the genetically engineered foods labeling initiative informs consumers which products and produce contains GMO materials (proteins). These products are often included as "Natural" or "Organic." Never in nature has proteins from different species been present, this is a violation of nature. It is unknown the long term impact of GE foods on human and animal health and its impact on ecosystems. We maintain we have the right to know what is in our food.
