U.S. diplomat, Victoria Nuland, has been taped in a telephone conversation with the U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine, in the Ukraine, discussing in great detail the efforts the U.S. was making to influence the flow of events within that country, including an extremely vulgar statement (“Fuck the EU!”) to dismiss Europe’s approach and diplomacy aimed at resolving the current crisis.
In the greatly coarsened culture of America in 2014, the use of the “F___” word, however disappointing in the mouth and thoughts of the Assistant Secretary of State and Special Ambassador for Europe and Eurasia, probably has a meaning more or less equivalent to that which “Screw the EU” might have had 10 or 20 years ago.
How does a ranking State Department official with the highest security clearances not know that the Russians, NSA, and half of Europe would be monitoring an unencrypted telephone? Is Nuland trying to channel David Patraeus? She was clearly dispatched to Kiev to stir the pot in an internal dispute -- or maybe she was just in Eastern Europe to poke Putin in the eye.
